Deck Builders Gold Coast
Hardwood and composite decks, designed with the paving, planting and lighting around them and built by the same team.

Bella Terra Group designs and builds decks across the Gold Coast from our base in Nerang. We build custom decks in hardwood timber and composite decking, including pool decks, with the steps, seating, planters and lighting that join a deck to the garden. Quotes are free and measured on site.

A timber yard can supply the boards, but a deck still has to be designed. Its height, shape and material decide how it meets the house, the paving beside it and the lawn below.
We design the deck with the rest of the space and build every stage ourselves. You have one company to call about every part of the space, from the footings to the last plant. Our owner, Dion McGirr, runs each project on site, from the first meeting to handover.

The two halves
What Makes a Deck Last on the Gold Coast?
A sound frame and the right boards make a deck last here. The frame beneath it has to stay sound through humidity, salt air and summer storms. The boards on top have to suit the sun the deck gets and the upkeep you’re prepared to do.
We settle both in the landscape design, along with the paving, planting and lighting around the deck, so the whole space is planned before anything is built.
The work
Our Deck Building Services
Our own team carries out the work below under our QBCC builder’s licence. Bring a rough idea of how you’ll use the deck and we’ll recommend the boards, fixings and layout to suit it.
Hardwood and composite decks
Hardwood has natural grain and colour but needs regular oiling or sealing. Composite, a mix of wood fibre and recycled plastic, needs no oiling and resists rot and insects. We help you choose between them on site.
Here's what our decking work covers.
- Hardwood timber decks
- Composite decking for low-upkeep spaces
- Pool decking, planned around the pool's edge
- Low decks and raised decks on sloping blocks
- Footings, frames and marine-grade fixings
- Built-in bench seating and deck steps

Steps, planters and lighting around the deck
We plan the deck with the paving, steps and planters around it, so the levels line up and water drains away from the house.
Here's what our work around the deck covers.
- Paving for the open patio beside the deck
- Raised planters, garden beds and timber steps
- Outdoor lighting under benches and steps, wired by a licensed electrician
- Outdoor kitchens and entertaining areas beside the deck
Every deck we quote starts on site, because the ground beneath it shapes the design. We measure the area, check the levels and talk through each board, how it weathers, how much upkeep it needs and what it costs.
The process
Our Process
Every deck starts with how you want to use it. From there, it runs in three stages.

- Consultation and site assessment. We check the levels, soil, drainage and access, and ask how you’ll use the deck.
- An itemised quote. The frame, boards, steps and lighting are priced separately, so you can see what each part costs.
- The build itself. Our team builds it in the order below, and Dion hands the finished deck back to you.
Why Does the Order of Works Matter?
A deck covers its own groundwork. Once the boards are down, the footings, drainage and cabling are hard to reach, so each one is finished first.
- Design and approvals. We agree the size, height and boards, and confirm whether the deck needs building approval.
- Set-out and footings. Footings go in first, set so the deck finishes level with the paving.
- Drainage and cabling. Drainage and conduit for the lighting are laid while the ground is still open.
- The frame. Bearers and joists sit on the footings, with airflow beneath the boards.
- Decking boards. The boards are fixed and spaced to allow for movement in heat and humidity.
- Steps, planting and lighting, last. These go in after the heavy work, so machinery and foot traffic can't damage them.
Why Bella Terra Group
Choosing Bella Terra Group for Your Deck
Our owner, Dion McGirr, has been in the trade for over 14 years. Our work runs from a deck and its surrounds to complete backyard and pool landscaping projects.
Each project is designed and built under QBCC licence 15452813. One client wrote that Dion “always showed up on time and was always transparent with us from start to finish.” Another wrote of “great communication skills and a great eye for detail, both which are scarce qualities in recent tradies I’ve dealt with.”
Every quote is free, itemised and prepared on site, with no obligation to go ahead.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a new deck cost on the Gold Coast?
The cost of a deck depends on its size and height, the boards you choose, the ground beneath it and what's built around it. A rate per square metre leaves most of that out, so we measure the site and provide a detailed, itemised quote at no charge.
Is composite decking or timber decking better on the Gold Coast?
Both work well here when the frame and fixings are right. Hardwood timber decking has natural grain but needs regular oiling or sealing, while composite decking needs no oiling and resists rot and insects. Near the coast, marine-grade fixings matter for either.
Do you build pool decking on the Gold Coast?
Yes. We build pool decks in hardwood and composite as part of the wider pool area, planned around the pool's edge, the fence line and the paving beside it.
How do I choose between decking companies on the Gold Coast?
Ask to see decks the company has built, check its licence on the QBCC register, and ask what the frame will sit on. A reliable deck builder can explain the footings, the board and fixing choices, and whether your deck needs building approval before you sign.
Do I need council approval for a deck on the Gold Coast?
Often, yes. The City of Gold Coast says a new timber deck is likely to need building approval from a private certifier. A deck raised off the ground needs approval unless it's under ten square metres, lower than one metre and meets all building requirements, and fire separation rules apply close to a boundary. We raise this at the site visit, so it's part of the plan.
