Stone Cladding Gold Coast

Natural stone cladding for entry walls, feature walls, pillars and planters, planned as part of the whole outdoor space and built by the same team.

Bella Terra Group is a stone cladding company based in Nerang, working across the Gold Coast. We design and install natural stone cladding for feature walls, entry walls, pillars, planters and pool walls, in custom stone finishes such as sawn or stacked stone, or rustic split stone. Quotes are free and measured on site.

Many of the businesses listed for stone cladding on the Gold Coast supply the stone and leave the installation to someone else. We plan where the stone goes as part of the whole outdoor space, build the wall, pillar or planter it sits on, then fix the stone to it.

Cladding is only as good as the surface behind it. Stone fixed to a wall with no waterproofing, or to a planter that moves, can crack, stain and work loose. Planned with the paving, levels and lighting, the stone lines up with the steps and the light falls across it as the design intended. Dion McGirr, our owner, runs each project on site from the first meeting through to handover.

The two halves

What Makes Stone Cladding Last?

Stone cladding lasts when the stone suits its setting and the structure behind it stays sound and dry. The stone and its finish are what you see every day. The structure behind it, meaning the wall, pillar or planter, with its waterproofing and drainage, is what holds the stone in place for years.

Good stone on a poorly prepared wall lets water in behind it, which draws white salt stains through the joints. A sound wall in the wrong stone looks out of place beside the house.

We settle the stone and the structure together. The stone, the wall it’s fixed to and the paving and lighting around it are drawn into one design before anything is built.

The work

Our Stone Cladding Services

Everything below is built by our own team under our QBCC builder’s licence, from the footing to the sealed joints. You don’t need to know the name of a stone to start. Show us a photo or describe the look you want, and we’ll talk through the stones that suit it.

Feature walls, entry walls and pillars

Stone wall cladding gives an entry, a boundary wall or a pair of pillars the look of solid stone without building the whole wall from it. Each piece is fixed with a method chosen for the stone's weight and the wall it sits on.

Here's what our wall cladding work covers.

  • Natural stone feature walls and front entry walls
  • Stacked stone on pool walls and water features
  • Entry and letterbox pillars
  • Cladding on new retaining walls and on sound brick, block or rendered walls
  • Sandstone, slate, travertine, granite and fieldstone, in sawn, split and stacked finishes
  • Waterproofing behind the stone, then pointing and sealing the joints

Stone in the garden and around the pool

Outside the house, stone cladding is usually one part of something larger, such as a raised planter beside a deck or the wall at the end of a pool. We plan it with the paving, planting and lighting around it, so the colours sit together and the light picks up the stone's texture after dark.

Here's what our garden and pool stonework covers.

  • Stone-clad raised planters and garden walls
  • Paving and coping chosen to suit the cladding
  • Outdoor lighting across the stone, wired by a licensed electrician
  • Cladding planned within a full landscape design

A site visit is the right place to start, because stone looks different on every wall and in every light. We look at the wall or area you have in mind and measure it.

We talk through the stone options, how each one weathers in coastal air, how much upkeep it needs and what it costs, so you can choose what suits your budget.

The process

Our Process

Every stone cladding project starts with the wall it goes on and how the space is used. From there, it runs in three stages.

Cutting a stone paver to size on a wet saw
  1. Consultation and site assessment. We check the wall the stone will go on, the drainage around it and the light it gets, and talk through the stones that would suit it.
  2. An itemised quote. Every part of the job is priced separately, so you can see what each element costs and stage the work if that suits you better.
  3. The work itself. Our team builds the structure and fixes the stone in the order below, and Dion hands the finished work back to you.

Why Does the Order of Works Matter?

The order matters because the stone is the last layer of the wall, and everything behind it has to be right first. Miss the waterproofing and finished stone has to come off again.

  1. Design and stone selection. The stone, its finish and where it goes are agreed in the design, with the paving around it.
  2. The structure. The footing and the wall, pillar or planter are built, or an existing wall is checked, so the stone has a sound base.
  3. Waterproofing and drainage. Walls against soil or beside a pool are sealed and drained, so moisture can't push salt stains through the stone.
  4. Conduit for lighting. Light cabling runs through the wall before it's clad, so finished stone never has to be cut.
  5. Fixing the stone. Each piece is cut, set out and fixed to the wall, with the pattern checked as it rises.
  6. Pointing and sealing, last. The joints are pointed and the stone is sealed once the heavy work nearby is finished.

Why Bella Terra Group

Choosing Bella Terra Group for Stone Cladding

Our owner, Dion McGirr, has been in the trade for over 14 years, and our stone cladding is usually part of a larger project: an entry, a pool area or a full backyard renovation. You can see more of them in our project gallery.

The same company builds the wall and fixes the stone, under QBCC licence 15452813, with Dion managing the work on site. One client wrote that “Bella Terra helped us with design and constructed the full landscape to a very high standard.” Another, whose project included stonemasonry, wrote that Dion “was an incredibly good communicator” and that the result is one “we are proud to showcase.”

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stone cladding cost on the Gold Coast?

The cost depends on the stone, the area to be clad, the condition of the wall behind it and how easily materials can reach it. Natural stone varies too much in weight and price for a set rate to be accurate, so we measure the wall and provide an itemised quote at no charge.

What's the difference between custom stone finishes and rustic stone finishes?

Custom stone finishes are cut and laid to a plan, such as sawn stone in straight courses or pale stacked stone with tight joints. Rustic stone finishes use split or natural-edged stone, such as fieldstone, laid in a random pattern. We talk through both at the site visit.

Do I need a separate builder for the wall behind the cladding?

No. We build the footing and the wall, pillar or planter ourselves and then clad it, so one team is responsible for both. We can also clad a sound existing brick, block or rendered wall once we've checked it on site.

How do I choose a stone wall cladding installer on the Gold Coast?

Ask to see stonework the installer has finished outdoors, and check their licence on the QBCC register. Then ask how the stone will be fixed, and what the wall behind it is built and waterproofed with. An installer who builds that wall as well can answer both.

Does a stone cladding installer need a licence in Queensland?

Yes, for work valued at more than $3,300. Queensland requires any contractor doing building work above that value to hold a QBCC licence. We carry out stone cladding under our own company licence, QBCC 15452813.
